SourceForge Site
Update: All fixed now... Somehow the permissions on all of the files got changed, but no biggie, everything works again.
For some reason all of my php code at the old open-beos.sourceforge.net site is dying at line 0. Not really sure what's going on with that, but I put up a redirector for now that sends everyone to this site. I'll try to figure out what's going on with that and get it back up though.
501(c)3! It's Here!
Yes, you can really believe it! Finally, the paperwork arrived.
So. When can you start donating? There are a few issues. I need to speak with a lawyer who specializes in this sort of thing on a couple of questions that I have. Secondly, I need to open a bank account for Haiku. Then we will be "in business".
I am really excited by this - it is the culmination of almost two years of work and waiting. :-)
UDF 1.0.0 beta 2
UDF 1.0.0 beta 2 is now available for download. This release fixes a bug in makeudfimage wherein large (i.e. > 4GB) images would end up corrupted, and also adds support for UDF 1.50 for those of you who want to be able to create images readable on systems that don't support UDF 2.01 (such as OS/X 10.2.5, amongst others I'm sure).
Please let me know if you have any troubles with it, or even if you have zero troubles with it. I think it's about ready for prime-time, after which I will begin work on adding attribute support. Hooray. :-)
A Call to the Community
While many of our team members are hard at work, coding and working on updating their team pages and adding all of the official site content, there are some other things that need to be done. We are going to need some Newbie Help Files and some Developer Tutorials to be written in order to fill some large blank spots on our new site. I posted more information in our forums. If you would like to help out with either of these, please see either the Newbie Help Files thread or the Developer Tutorials thread.
Welcome!
I would like to give everyone a nice warm welcome to the new Haiku-OS.org site! Since the nice webserver decided to have some hardware difficulties a couple of days before WalterCon (when this site was supposed to launch) I was not able to finish my updates on time. Hence, there are still a few areas of the site missing bits of content.
Also, because of the massive amount of code and the development period of well over a year, there may still be a few bugs to work out. This is by far the largest program I've ever written, so please, enjoy it =). It's been a great experience working with everyone to get it completed, but it was a lot of work, so please be sure to tell everyone 'thank you'. If by chance you do happen to find a bug or something, please tell me in the Web Site Team Forum, but check to make sure no one else has posted the same problem.
And just for the record, there's a lot more stuff coming your way!
Boot (loader) progress
Our boot loader now shows the Haiku logo while booting, and it now also has a boot menu that you can reach when pressing the space key early in the process.
The menu actually works and can be used to set the video mode the system will use later on.
We even have a few screenshots for you: the boot menu (it does probably look familiar to you), the video mode selection, the logo that is now shown during boot, and the shell after having booted from hard disk.
"From hard disk?" you ask? Since about a week now, we're able to completely boot off of an HD, but we didn't want to tell you before WalterCon :-) It's currently ISA IDE only, and the build system leaves you completely alone with this, but when the process is a bit more mature, I will release a detailed description on how you can build your personal little Haiku boot image.
Finally, some of you might already know, we had an intermediate boot logo in CVS before WalterCon that I don't want to deprive you of.
Besides getting PCI IDE to work, the next steps involve getting the non-graphical parts of our libbe.so replacement to work on the new system so that it will open us many BeOS command line applications; right now, only functions in libroot.so are available.
New Name and Other Stuff
All kidding aside, the new name is indeed Haiku. BeGroovy and BeOSJournal have all of the news. Unfortunately, the new web server decided to have hardware issues, so you all will have to wait a little longer to see the new website. Trust me - it is worth the wait. :-D
Have a good weekend and we hope to have the new site up at the beginning of next week.
Michael
WalterCon started
WalterCon has started, and some news are beginning to leak.
The new name of OpenBeOS seems to have been revealed rashly, and in a surprising move, President of beunited.org Simon Gauvin announced a new strategic partnership with Haiku Inc. at WalterCon.
But don't be afraid, BeUnited already announced a lot of things, and most OpenBeOS developers have been as surprised as you. It's expected that a lot of companies will make similar announcements during the next few days, we are still waiting for confirmation from Yellow Tab, Mad Scientist Entertainment and Team Maui, just to name a few.
CVS IRC bot
In case you've missed it: thanks to Niels Reedijk, we are now utilizing the CIA IRC bot - it monitors several open source projects and submits all CVS changes to the appropriate mailing lists.
Therefore, every change to our the CVS repository can now be monitored live in #openbeos at Freenode as well.
